ABOUT
A painter with an ever-evolving inner world. Kim Young-hwa is a central figure in Korean-style painting in Korea. Known by titles such as “Korea’s first golf painter,” “master of Dongdo Seogi (Eastern Way, Western Tools)” and “the painter who painted the king’s portrait,” she explores depth of inner life and Eastern color under the theme of “meditation and healing,” and continues a positive dialogue with viewers. This creates the deep artistic value felt in her work.
In 2020, in Kim’s own words, her “life’s work” came into the world: the “Magic Moment” series. The series expands the viewer’s world of reflection and expresses meditation and the world of inner images. Kim said, “My earlier work was mostly paintings for myself. But this work is for the viewer.” The “Magic Moment” series has a consistent three-part structure. The non-figurative work of color, ink and gold powder on the three divided planes adds stability to the picture. The number three signifies completeness; it reduces the stress of choosing, creates balance and builds rhythm. She found the healing art she had always pursued in a change in the structure of her work. Her work continues to evolve. To convey deeper energy of meditation and healing to both creator and viewer, she continues to move toward perfection.
