ABOUT
Lee Se-hyun is widely known for Red Landscape, and the landscapes convey the artist’s message through a tangle of the real and the conceptual. Lee’s visual experience in an army unit at the front line along the armistice line shaped the red landscapes that now represent the artist: the mountains and fields seen through a night-vision infrared scope were enough to become a new image for seeing the world. After finishing studies in the United Kingdom and returning in 2009, Lee became a witness to many events in Korean society, and icons as symbols of them were recorded in the paintings as a kind of on-site accusation. The “Between Red” series, which has continued for over ten years, has gradually changed under the premise of depicting our nature in red in a formally beautiful way. As the landscapes and objects that appear change with society, Lee has raised the structural and formal completeness with more refined arrangements. With this consciousness Lee is now invited to large-scale solo exhibitions and many biennales, and works as an artist who guarantees both commercial value and sincerity.
