ABOUT

“The Inner Beauty Steeped from Old Jars” is how Sung Ha-rim’s return to the classics is described: the painting explores the inherent inner self through jars, moon jars, flowers and vases. The feast of enchanting color born over some forty years shows a long effort. If the 1980s and 1990s leaned somewhat toward figurative expression, from the 2000s Sung continued color experiments in non-figurative abstraction. Since the 2010s, Sung has been absorbed in how to paint still lifes and objects that hold the Korean spirit, and so began exploring color. It was only after some forty years, reaching a point of working beyond depicting a shape as it is, to internalizing and steeping it, that its form began to emerge. One can gauge how long that process was. (Art historian Oh Jeong-yeop)

“The impression of the jars, the moon jars I saw as a child, later had an important influence on my painting world. The warmth and round shape of the moon jar seemed as if it could bear the world, and when I saw flowers arranged in it, my heart would flutter at its elegance.” (From the artist’s note, Sung Ha-rim)
